Redware Sgraffito Plate Workshop by Denise Wilz

March 7 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join us for a hands-on redware sgraffito pottery workshop hosted by master artisan Denise Wilz. This redware workshop focuses on the sgraffito technique used by 18th- and 19th-century Pennsylvania German potters to make expressive designs in their folk-art pottery. Sgraffito means to “scratch” and workshop participants will draw and then scratch a design on a redware plate. Participants may choose a traditional Pennsylvania German design or create their own.

Participants will sgraffito decorate 7” or 10″ redware plates coated with white clay slip; limit of 2 plates as time permits. The plates, all necessary tools, and books for ideas will be provided (feel free to bring your own ideas, too). After the workshop, the plates will be dried, glazed, and fired (process takes 4-5 weeks). Participants will be notified when their plates are ready and can be picked up at the Dewees Tavern. Contact programs@historictrappe.org if shipping is necessary.

Workshop Fee: $70 Member, $75 Non-Member

Materials Fees: 7” plate is $38 or 10” plate is $50. Advanced tickets required. This workshop is limited to 8 people.

Please bring your own lunch as there will be a break to eat!
